The Applicants
1. The amici curiae (Applicants) have a wealth of experience in working on issues of
international justice generally and the struggle against torture specifically.
1.1Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people working for respect and
protection of internationally-recognized human rights principles. The organization has over
2.2 million members and supporters in more than 150 countries and territories and is
independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. It bases
its work on the international human rights instruments adopted by the United Nations as
well as those adopted by regional bodies such as the Organization of American States. It
also has consultative status before the United Nations Economic and Social Council, the
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Council of
Europe, has working relations with the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the African Union,
and is also properly registered as a civil society organization with the Organization of
American States enabling it to participate in its activities.
1.2 The International Commission of Jurists is a non-governmental organization working to
advance understanding and respect for the Rule of Law as well as the protection of human
rights throughout the world. It was set up in 1952 and has its headquarters in Geneva
(Switzerland). It is made up of 60 eminent jurists representing different justice systems
throughout the world and has 90 national sections and affiliated justice organisations. The
International Commission of Jurists has consultative status at the United Nations Economic
and Social Council, the United Nations Organisation for Education, Science and Culture
(UNESCO), the Council of Europe and the African Union. The organisation also
cooperates with various bodies of the Organisation of American States and the InterParliamentary Union. The International Commission Jurists regularly intervenes before
national and international courts.
1.3 The Redress Trust (REDRESS) is an international non-governmental organisation with a
mandate to seek justice and redress for victims of torture and related international crimes.
It has a wide expertise on the rights of victims to gain both access to the courts and redress
for their suffering, and has advocated on behalf of victims from all regions of the world. It
regularly undertakes cases on behalf of individual torture survivors and assists those
representing such individuals. REDRESS has extensive experience of interventions before
national and international courts and tribunals.
