About the author Ilja Luciak is Professor of Political Science at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. For the past 30 years he has conducted field research in Mexico, Central America, Cuba, Peru and Colombia focusing on gender, security and peace. He has worked as a consultant for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), the Office of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women (OSAGI) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Professor Luciak holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Vienna and a PhD from the University of Iowa.
